Greed Rules Still

Is U.S. stuck in Internet's slow lane?

NEW YORK - The United States is starting to look like a slowpoke on the Internet. Examples abound of countries that have faster and cheaper broadband connections, and more of their population connected to them.

What's less clear is how badly the country that gave birth to the Internet is doing, and whether the government needs to step in and do something about it. The Bush administration has tried to foster broadband adoption with a hands-off approach. If that's seen as a failure by the next administration, the policy may change.

[...]

The Organization for Economic Co-operation and Development — a 30-member club of nations — compiles the most often cited international comparison. It puts the U.S. at 15th place for broadband lines per person in 2006, down from No. 4 in 2001.

The OECD numbers have been vigorously attacked by anti-regulation think tanks for making the U.S. look exceedingly bad. They point out that the OECD is not very open about how it compiles the data. It doesn't count people who have access to the Internet at work, or students who have access in their dorms.

[...]

But the OECD numbers are in line with other international measures. Figures from the British research firm Point-Topic Ltd. put the U.S., with 55 percent of its households connected, in 17th place for adoption rates at the end of June (excluding some very small countries and territories like Macau and Hong Kong).

"We're now in the middle of the pack of developed countries," said Dave Burstein, telecom gadfly and the editor of the DSL Prime newsletter, during a sometimes tense debate at the Columbia Business School's Institute for Tele-Information.

Burstein says the U.S. is lagging because of low levels of investment by the big telecom companies and regulatory failure.

Several of the European countries that are doing well have forced telephone companies to rent their lines to Internet service providers for low fees. The ISPs use them to run broadband Digital Subscriber Lines, or DSL, often at speeds much higher than those available in the U.S.

The U.S. Federal Communications Commission went down this regulatory road a few years ago, but legal challenges from the phone companies forced it to back away.

In 2004, President Bush called for nationwide broadband access by 2007, to be nurtured by an absence of taxation and little regulation. The U.S. is very close to Bush's goal, thanks to the availability of satellite broadband across the lower 48 states.

But the Internet by satellite is expensive and slow. Nearly everyone may have access to the Internet, but that doesn't mean they're plugging in.

Ain't that the point? Count availability not how many are actually getting to use it. When they talk about getting rid of tiered access levels, then we will be getting some place.

Genshiken 13 OVA 1

Genshiken 14 OVA 2

Genshiken 15 OVA 3

Will maybe put them up on eMule too. What the canadians need to do is just copy EXACTLY what the fan subbers do. And the fan subbers if they are going to drop anime projects as crappy dubbed version come out. They need to at least do episode summaries.

Brown County GOP Chairman Donald Fleischman has resigned his post, says a spokesperson, after being accused of enticement and fondling of an underage boy
[...]
Fleischman, 37, is free after posting a $20,000 bond on September 28. "My client is innocent of the charges," says attorney Jeff Jazgar, who "declined to discuss specifics."

"Our plan is to get some witnesses to testify and present enough information to dismiss the case."

The boy was found by police in Fleischman's home on two occasions in late 2006 while being sought as a runaway from Ethan House, a home for at-risk youth. Now 17, he says he stayed with Fleischman at his house and a cabin, where he was provided with alcohol and cannabis, and regularly fondled.

"I'm not going to ask for financial help," she told The Associated Press on Friday. But she added, "If it comes, I'm not going to turn it down, either."

Hasn't this bit where they claim music downloads are hurting the "industry" getting a little old yet? Somebody should set up a donation website or something.

Your Opinions Don't Matter

Ex-Google manager can sue for age bias

SAN JOSE, Calif. - A 54-year-old former Google Inc. manager who claimed he was fired after a supervisor told him his opinions were "too old to matter" had his age discrimination lawsuit reinstated.
[...]
He alleged in his suit that his supervisors did not initially tell him why he was being fired. Director of Engineering Wayne Rosing, 55, eventually said he was not a good "cultural fit" at Google, where some colleagues referred to him as an "old guy" and "fuddy-duddy," Reid said.

Another supervisor, Urs Hoelzle allegedly said Reid, who is a diabetic, was too sluggish and "too old to matter" and his ideas were obsolete.

Reid is seeking back pay and punitive damages. He made $200,000 a year and lost stock options valued at millions of dollars when he lost his job.

Damn kids.

Maybe Something In The Water?

Private water users should test at least yearly for bacteria and other chemicals that may be of interest. Even if your water is safe, yearly testing will enable you to have a record of your water's prior history, so that if a change occurs, you will know. In addition, should anyone damage your water supply, you will have proof of your water quality prior to the damage (2).

Water testing may be done by private testing labs, county and state health laboratories, departments of health, and some local environmental consulting companies (2). Be sure that private testing labs are certified by your state department of health. Additional help may be found by contacting the Safe Drinking Water Hotline at 1-800-426-4791. For well owners, the EPA has two publications that may be able to help you out: Citizen Monitoring: Recommendations to Household Well Users (EPA 570/9-90-006, April 1990) and Drinking Water from Household Wells (EPA 570/9-90-013, September 1990). They also provide the phone number in each state where you can call and request a list of certified laboratories (3).

I'm just saying.

Sketchbook: Full Color's

Hopefully the next series to be done by Doremi. I am down to just Naruto and Bleach.

History'sStrongest Desciple ComesTo An End

So it's over now. No more Kenichi. Which by the way was really funny for those who know about the fighting genre.

Ok so the last episode sucked hard. It was just a little bit of new sandwiched between flash backs. Then run down of all the characters.

Reminds me of Kiba. The abandon the story to bring it to an end. The manga in a different direction all together than anime anyway. I didn't know they did that. I thought they pretty much just animated the stroy and not come up with their own. I mean I understand things like Bleach and the Bounto storyline.

This just seemed like they said whoa, there sure is a lot to this story. And started cutting and cutting things out and said okay the end.
